Widgets: Bluetooth OnOff, GPS OnOff, WiFi OnOff, LockPattern OnOff, AutoRotate OnOff, Brightness Level

Publisher: CurveFish

Introduction

The CurveFish OnOff widgets were the first widgets I downloaded when I got my new Motorola DROID. I needed to have complete control over my connections to save on battery life, and found a few little fun widgets along the way. And to have found a publisher that has released multiple widgets of the same theme excite the OCD inside me.

Bluetooth OnOff, WiFi OnOff

The Bluetooth OnOff and WiFi OnOff are just that, great widgets for controlling the state of your Bluetooth and WiFi connections. Straight forward and usable.

Bluetooth OnOff Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

WiFi OnOff Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

GPS OnOff

The GPS OnOff widget is very much like the Bluetooth OnOff and WiFi OnOff widgets, with the exception that it must be linked to another service. I originally linked it to the Bluetooth service, but the GPS froze and never turned on. I linked it to the WiFi, and seems to work, but I hate losing my WiFi connection just to turn my GPS on or off.

GPS OnOff Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

LockPattern OnOff

LockPattern OnOff is nice for configuring whether, once your phone locks, it unlocks using the slider or lock pattern. I use it to switch between being home, and away from home, as I don’t need anyone having that easy of access to all of my data.

LockPattern OnOff Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

AutoRotate OnOff

I honestly don’t enjoy my phone rotating from landscape to portrait without me explicitly telling it to. This is where AutoRotate OnOff comes into play. If your keyboard is retracted, your phone’s display is set to portrait. If your keyboard is extracted, your phone’s display is set to portrait. And putting your DROID in the car dock in portrait mode overrides the widget, which is perfect.

AutoRotate OnOff Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Brightness Level

While not specifically an OnOff widget, it works with with the battery saving features of the OnOff widgets by allowing you to EASILY change the screen brightness, saving you battery when you don’t need the screen on, or don’t need it bright.

Brightness Level Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Final Thoughts

Overall, very satisfied with these widgets. So much so that I have a desktop devoted to geek tweaks, and they occupy the first six positions.

Overall Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

By: Steven Brady

About the Author:

It was sort of an open secret in the tech world that Dell would be releasing a smart phone that would be competing with the iPhones and Blackberries flooding the market. Therefore, no one was surprised when Dell announced that they would soon be launching the Dell Mini 3. No word yet on when its official release be but it would initially be available in China and Brazil only.

Why it is called Android based

The Dell Mini 3 is an Android based smart phone meaning its mobile operating system is Linux based. According to Wikipedia, “the unveiling of the Android distribution on 5 November 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 47 hardware, software, and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. Google released most of the Android code under the Apache License, a free software and open source license.”

During its launch, 2 carriers were expected to carry the Dell Mini 3. That would be Claro for Brazil and China Mobile for China. It is also mentioned that only the handset going to Brazil will have 3G capabilities. For the Brazilian market, this handset will operate on tri band 850/1900/2100 UMTS/HSDPA. It is also expected to have WIFI B/G capabilities, A-GPS and multi-touch support.

The handsets going to China will only be in 2G but will be using the Chinese-designed Open Mobile System (OMS). There is no word yet if the Dell Mini 3 would reach American shores though some even suggested that with the onslaught of better android based smart phones like Motorola Droid, Samsung Behold III and HTC Droid Eris, it would be smart strategy indeed to launch its android-based mobile phone in a different country.

The American market is already too crowded with a lot of smart phones though Dell itself is not closing the possibility of bringing the Dell Mini 3 in American shores through its tie up with AT&T and Verizon.

And why not have its launch in China, which is considered the most populous nation in the world and its subscriber base is more than double the US market?

Features and Specifications

There is no word yet on its exact specifications but rumors are ripe that this smart phone will have a 3.5-inch touch screen, a 360 by 640 resolution, a 3.2 mega pixel camera with led flashlight and Bluetooth capabilities. Other features found in this phone are light sensor for adjusting back light, a mini-USB port, microSD card slot and is entirely operating using the touch screen. It also uses 950 mAh battery.

Dell is popularly known as one of the leading manufacturers of desktops and laptops using their own wireless utilities. They also tried their hand in manufacturing other devices like PDAs, cameras and other peripherals though the reception they received were mixed at best.

Mixed reviews were also given for this smart phone as well. With the way, Dell Mini 3 was presented, it has a full range of devices sold in different OS options and configurations. To further whet the appetite of its consumers, Dell refused to give additional information regarding its pricing, availability and other specifications.

By: Simon Drew

About the Author:

Dell is back in the mobile gadget industry. Long after their last Pocket PC, Dell has come back with a more updated device; a smart phone. After all, it was smart phone technology that eventually made the Pocket PC obsolete. The company is definitely moving in a different direction now.

Unlike Dell’s other products, the 3 in this smart phone does not refer to the screen size (like the Dell Mini 10); the Mini 3 has a 3.5 inch screen instead of 3. But the name is not the only standard convention that no longer applies to this device, even its market placement and the sales strategy applied for this phone is unique when it comes to Dell products.

Instead of seeing a UK and US release, this smart phone will first land in China and later, a revised 3G model in Brazil. China Mobile is currently the world’s largest mobile phone carrier with millions of users and the Dell Mini 3 will be released in China under this same carrier. Since China has yet to have an established 3G network, the China version of the Mini will be without 3G capabilities.

The OPhone

Another unique trait with the China version of the Mini 3 is that this version will not be using the original Google Android OS; instead, the phone will be using a modified version of the Android. This China-revision is called the OPhone and while it is based on the Google OS, it visually resembles the iPhone OS more. This graphical shift also gives the OS a better interface that is suited for applications. With the OPhone mostly relying on applications to extend its functionality (and access to China Mobile’s own version of the app store), the China Mini 3 is best suited for general use and entertainment. It lacks 3G so the networking capabilities are a little limited.

Outside China

This phone has yet to see a release outside of China, but Dell has confirmed that the first country it will land in is Brazil.

The mobile phone will be launched by Claro –another large scale mobile phone carrier with at least 4.2 million subscribers; Claro is also under American Movil. The pattern of Dell’s strategy with this new phone seems to be making success not through the sheer amount of sales instead of boosting market hype with high end specs. Only time will tell if the idea will pay off, so far, Dell’s marketing department seems to have lot of faith in the idea.

Since Brazil has 3G (thanks to Claro), the version of the Dell Mini 3 to be launched in Brazil will have 3G capabilities. Also different is the operating system. Instead of the China OPhone, this Claro-released device will be using an Android OS; though no details if the Android will be skinned by Dell and regarding what version of the Google OS will be used.

The rest of the world will have to wait if Dell will actually bring the phone to other countries, though they might release a completely different device. They already have 3G net books out and it is quite possible that the rumors about a Dell smart phone for the US and the UK last October may be referring to a different device.

By: Simon Drew

About the Author:

When the first rumors that Dell would be releasing a smart phone came out, only a very few ears perked up. After all, with ACER’s recent step into the deep and tepid pool of the ever expanding industry of mobile phones, no one was impressed with their offerings (even the ACER Liquid, with its amazing hardware is having a hard time getting attention).

But Dell seems to have other things in mind. Knowing that breaking into the mobile phone market will not be easy if they want to compete in terms of hardware. With devices such as the XPERIA X10, HTC Hero, Motorola Milestone and plenty of other devices already occupying the upper echelons of today’s mobile elite (with the iPhone occupying the most coveted top spot of course), Dell has decided to compete in terms of sheer mass.

The Mini 3 is basic smart phone, it has a 3.5 inch touch screen, an application based system and usual features such as Bluetooth, GPS, micro USB, micro SD, etc. While a mid-tier device would do okay in the western market, under a strong carrier, it is bound to make profits. Thus the Dell Mini 3 will be launched in China and Brazil under some of the largest mobile phone carriers in the world.

The China Mobile Version Details

If you want to make sales on sheer number of subscribers alone, then China Mobile is the way to go. While China has no 3G (it is still being established as of now), they have a strong market of mobile phone users who still have a great demand for smart phones despite the limitations in online connectivity.

China Mobile is currently the world’s largest mobile carrier, if Dell is able to get even a small percentage of this vast population to get their device, the phone will be a financial success. So far, Dell has yet to release sales information about the Mini 3 since it has been launched in China.

As one might expect, the Mini 3 will not have 3G capabilities –at least in China. And instead of using the Android operating system that the phone was designed for, the Mini 3 will instead be using the OPhone operating system. This is a China made OS that is based on the Google Android –the graphic interface on the other hand, heavily resembles the iPhone operating system’s interface. While it is not quite original (well, not at all), its interface is pretty functional and serves its purpose well. OPhone also has its own App store under China Mobile.

The Claro Version Details

The Dell Mini 3 will also be launched in Brazil under the Claro carrier. This carrier currently has approximately 4.2 million users and is under the American Movil company. Dell has yet to announce the capabilities of the Mini 3 for Brazil, but it is certain that this version will have 3G and will be using a Google Android operating system (most likely version 1.6 Donut due to the fact that it is the most commonly used version and because the 2.0 Éclair’s source has only recently been released).

By: Simon Drew

About the Author:

(taken from the Crystallight Defense website)

Introduction:

While searching for another defense game in the Android Market that I’d been told about, I came across Crystallight Defense. It looked pretty good (I liked the graphics, honestly) so I opted to download it. After installing, I went through the tutorial and had a rather difficult time grasping the game. I started playing through individual battles, and to be quite honest, I struggled. It took me a couple days to beat the first battle (I left it on the default 40 waves). After beating it once, I started through the story mode, and found it rather easy. I’ve been hooked on the gameplay, and found myself enjoying it for hours when I have better things to do, like sleep.

Pros:

Addicting gameplay

Multiple levels of play in demo, and 40 levels in the paid version

Online rating system

Cons:

Tutorial leaves a bit to be desired

Game should have an “Additional Help” option that opens the website up in a browser

Graphics Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Tutorial Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.17 out of 5 stars

Final Thoughts:

What started as a time killer to “play one before bed” turned into a bit of an addiction. So much so that now, when I’ve found myself at a level that I’m unable to beat, I find myself frustrated and playing three or four times before giving in for the night. It’s quickly become my favorite game to play on my phone, and the only game I’ve been addicted to more than this one was StarCraft.

By: Steven Brady

About the Author:

is the better phone? The Nexus One or Motorola Droid

Just this morning, Google held a live press conference from their corporate headquarters in Mountain View, California, and spilled the beans on their new smart phone, the Nexus One, including where it will be available for purchase and how much you will have to pay to get one.

Most significantly, the network you will soon be anathemising with your new Google phone will be T-Mobile’s. The phone will be available for $179 with a contract (and free overnight shipping anywhere in the US), or $530 unlocked and contract-free.

>>>Get A Free Motorola Droid<<<

And these are the technical particulars you’ll get for that kind of coin:

- 3.7-inch, 480 x 800 AMOLED display

- 1GHz Snapdragon processor

- 5 megapixel camera with LED flash

- 3.5mm headphone jack

The phone also comes preloaded with a 4GB microSD card, but will accept up to 32GB. Charging and connectivity will be handled through a mini-USB port, and the Nexus One also sports an LED-backlit trackball for purposes currently unknown.

Will this be the new iPhone killer? It’s still early days, but what we are hearing so far are certainly very positive reviews., and the inclusion of expandable and interchangeable storage, a great camera with a flash, and a 1GHz chip will defianetly be give the iPhone makers plenty to ponder over.

It seems like just yesterday the Motorolad Droid just hit the market. And here is the best part, for a very limited time, you will still be able to receive the Droid for free.

By: Stephen

About the Author:
